Apologies for the break between mailouts, its been a while to be sure. I only hope that the following information warms you to the Grand Cause. 2023 has kicked off with a serious amount of momentum.

Late 2022

Grand Casual only played a handful of shows in 2022, things where somewhat Covid effected, though we got stuck in in the rehearsal space with seven cracking new tunes under the belt. November 2022 saw the three of us take home WA's best regional act at The WAM awards off the back of four years worth of nominations, stoked to get that one over the line. I felt quite confident in my attire choice for the evening, really had to be spot on with Joe and Matt unable to join me at the awards night, speech was average, strong hat game though.

Late December Metro Shows

We dove back into the metro scene mid December with a short run of shows, taking in Clancys Fremantle, The Bird Northbridge and down to Dunsborough for a classic Clancys Fish Pub Sunday Session. Solid turn out across the board, honestly quite the loose weekend all round.

There Goes The Sun

There Goes The Sun was the next big show on the horizon kicking off 2023 and our first full length set in Esperance for quite sometime. Always an absolute pleasure playing to a sold out Esperance crowd, I mean coming home is always an absolute delight. Wrapped to have been joined on stage by Melody Franzone, for back up vocals on Who You Are and some quality tambourine action. Headed across to Hopetoun on the Sunday for a bloody excellent afternoon of tunes in Mculloch Park, ripper crowd all round.

Upcoming Shows

So where to next everywhere it seems, we have some amazing shows coming up, highlights are a support slot for The Rubens on Feb 18th in Kalgoorlie and a coupla shows with a band that has had a heavy influence on Grand Casual 19-Twenty. Salubrious Sunday falls April 2nd at Lucky Bay Brewery featuring Grand Casual, 19-Twenty and Ill Starred Captain. This one will be large also our last show in Esperance for a good while, grab your tix here.

Recording

And don't be afraid those delicious new tunes are set to hit your radio waves. We head back into the studio with Andy Lawson early March for a week. set to record 4 songs if not another one on top of that, the new tunes are bloody dope and cant wait for yall to hear them. So with recording in the works the second half of 2023 will no doubt involve releasing music and all the emails that come with that.

It has been an actual while. a good friend recently said "the down time ensures the up times are fucking epic" honestly we couldn't agree more. Life has been steady to be sure for the three of us, Cooper recently returning from a casual trip to Ireland and the UK, Joe recently coming to the end of a solid local football season (grand final loss) and Kyza buried in Summer event programming.

Though through all of that we have achieved something we set out to do, with seven new tracks ready to be taken to the recording stage, not to mention the live environment when we kick back into action.

Mixed Up Kid Released

Today is a celebration with the release of Mixed Up Kid, massive shout out to Andy Lawson at Debaser studio for his work on this one. It took us a good while to release, the tune recorded early 2021. Kyza was really the stumbling block on this one, never quite comfortable with the verse melody. But hey sometimes yah just gotta send your creations into the atmosphere and see what kind of weather they generate. Mixed Up Kid is live and available across all your platforms, snap it up here.

Upcoming Gigs

We have a couple of dope gigs on the horizon for Esperance, first of which will be a performance at the local Ag Show October 14th, followed in quick succession by Demos from Esperance Live Launch at The Esperance Bay Yacht Club October 15th, accompanied by so many of our best friends. Tix are up for that one, grab yours here.

Kyza is chipping away on some super fun shows for Summer, we head back to Perth in December for a 3 gig run, Esperance and Hopetoun in Jan for a coupla fun ones, then back to Perth and the SouthWest in Feb before hitting the studio in March. Feels like time to build.

Anyway from Coop, Matt and Kyz over at Grand Casual, all the love in the world. XXX
Grand Casualtag:grandcasual.com,2005:Post/65577712021-02-25T06:03:38+08:002022-08-20T10:35:37+08:00Sway Is Live
Sway a single with Heart

Before reading the following rambling grab yourself a listen to our fresh single Sway, Right Here. Sway is out on all platforms today.

I can remember when we first jammed on Sway, it was exceptionally spontaneous and felt like it was finished before we began. Joe and Matt have such an ability to bounce off of each other in the jam room, I get the opportunity to just meander melodies through their work its a super nice dynamic. Sway incorporates washing reverb and fast-paced drum work drawing forth a vibrant surf rock-inspired soundscape. High toned-vocals, lead to the creation of a classy chorus hook, that became a strong central focus of the track.

Lyrically the track discusses a chance meeting at a party that over time becomes an enduring relationship. I regularly feel overwhelmed in social settings. Im a complete introvert at heart, and I can be super awkward at times. Listening to Sway I fell I can throw these restraints off, at least for a moment.

Recorded in August 2021 by Andy Lawson at Debaser Studios Perth, a session that seemed unlikely to go ahead due to pandemonium, the three of us headed in with a sense of optimism. This vibe flows through Sway from the uplifting synth to the far-reaching full-bodied chorus. Sway is available across all platforms from Thursday the 25th of Feb, the release date timed to coincide with Grand Casual’s performance at The Nannup Music Festival 2021.

We have a super fun run of shows to coincide with the release which includes 3 sets at the Nannup Music Festival, followed by South Side of Summer at Lucky Bay Brewery, March 20th (grab your ticks here). Our first gig, March 28th in Perth (full details yet to be released) and a super sweet set at Bungalow Neighbourhood Social Sunday arch 29th, what better way to get the track out into the world.

Sway is available now from all your fav streaming platforms and can also be listened to at our website. To get a taste of the tune right now dive in here.

What else is Happening

That's as good of a question as any, following the Nannup Music Festival (last weekend of Feb) we head back to Perth to record with the one and only Andy Lawson, two more tracks this time around. Another tasty piece of news, Grand Casual has been nominated for WAM best regional act 2020 (WAMawards) which is our third year running, we must be doing something right. That aside Coop is cleaning windows, I'm stressing and Joe is being a dickhead when overtired, but hey that's what bands are all about. Much Love Grand Casual.

An Industry disrupted sharply by our societal need for physical disconnection leaves acts driven by live performance adrift. Our motivation falls squarely upon upfront close quarters intimacy, we need your energy like you need ours. Weary outlooks may be the order of the present day, though our passage towards the live music dawn quickens. Ever thankful that sound burned into the digital realm has allowed you a semblance of our artistry over the months past. Your support of our latest offering Western Border has not been misplaced and we hope to reciprocate further with the promise of new compositions and live preparations from the laboratory.

A return to Grand Casual is a return to comradery, a reconnection in a time where we have felt so far apart, and reconnection means the reignition of creativity, for no new piece is ever written by one. Our greatest strength as an enterprise is the collaborative outlook we take to song composition. With three individual entities contributing equally in the writing of new material, our sound becomes a representation, a reflection of each of our creative journeys combined, wholly allowing for a united live act. When the time comes, we will share a new energy, that is guaranteed.

Formalities aside, Matt, Joe And Kyron would love to thank you all for your ongoing support. We hope isolation has found you well and we look forward to celebratory libations when the time is right. Infinite thanks to the multitude of front line workers who carry our society forward, we would be nowhere if not for you, our ability to create music would be meaningless without you.

We could not be happier with the reception received for our latest tune Western Border.
Until then, friends this is over and out.

Grand Casualtag:grandcasual.com,2005:Post/62829742020-04-15T18:11:17+08:002022-08-22T08:43:55+08:00Save The Best
2019, around Aprilish we went a little stir crazy. A short period saw us with next to no live shows, a result of a hell of a lot of live shows either side. Perhaps our management was being somewhat slack or taking a break, booking shows can be a bitch. 2020 sees us in a similar period with a lack of live shows, a lack of rehearsals, a lack of writing new material, hell a lack of band meetings at Dome over a casual coffee. I think the three of us are missing tour breakfasts the most, gathered around a table, discussing the previous night, set, general antics all the things really.

Live Music has taken a back seat, with the digital realm coming to the fore. Fortuitous then that Grand Casual had band and fan favourite tune, Western Border sitting fresh and ready for release. A crispy product courtesy of Andy Lawson at Debaser Studio. We've delved deeper into what it means to release a single in the digital world, kicked off with a band first track premier on Perths own RTRFM with Taylah Strano for breakfast epic indeed. A fair amount of pitching to radio, blogs, playlists etc has found a measurable amount of success, stay tuned for some single reviews and the like over the coming weeks. Joe has kept the social media hilarity rolling in the way only he can, and Coop has been the catalyst and main man in the creation and sale of our first ep Western Border, featuring all our released tunes thus far (also a bonus track yet to be released). Hit us up if keen.

Western Border is of today available for your listening pleasure, across multiple platforms. Spotify, Apple Itunes, Triple J Unearthed, Sound Cloud they're all there. From the comfort of you're own home, you can hear our favourite track to drink to, to mosh to, to sing to, to drive to. We challenge you to know each and every lyric prior to the next time we perform live, who knows there maybe a cheeky little beverage in it.

Grand Casualtag:grandcasual.com,2005:Post/62112262020-02-11T13:32:08+08:002022-03-15T21:44:07+08:00Its GO Time
Its Go Time

Following two epic back to back gigs being the Hopetoun Beach Party and Beach Dazed at The Yacht Club in late December Grand Casual dropped into a sort of limbo. With Joe set to be away from late Feb to Mid May I think we where struggling to decide what the hell should we actually be doing up til that date. A hectic schedule for the second half on 2019 saw us all a little burnt out, a planned month off in January was a restless one, the three of us questioning exactly what should we be doing right now.

A bit of a mental rejig saw the release of single Go on Saturday Feb 1st. This was an epic decision. Releasing a single shouldn't be taken lightly, so much blood is poured into each one of those songs, time and yes money. I guess the side of a release fans and the public don't see is the exponential amount of work that can be done for each launch, I could honestly spend 40 hours a week on a single launch and still find things to do. A baseline is developing artwork, uploading across all digital platforms, development and implementation of a social media marketing strategy, traditional marketing strategy, print, radio etc, shows in support of, servicing to radio stations the list goes on. So as an independent artist what do you do? You do your bloody best is what you do, and be stoked that those delicious sounds are getting out and about.

Go is a track about forgiveness, its a track about recognising that we are flawed, that we make mistakes. Its also about love and the ability to overcome difficult times in relationships, our ability to grow and prosper through adversity, it is a song full of hope, and a damn fine track to dance to. If you are yet to listen to Go you can find it on all streaming platforms. And is free to download from our webpage. If you love it add it to your playlists, fire it a share, follow Grad Casual on the streaming platforms, or just text us and say hey guys, that song does leave me feeling hopeful, thanks for that, xxx.

Late January we made it back into the jam room, we also managed to get a little busy with a few fun activities cropping up. GC ran two workshops in partnership with WAM and ECA. These things are absolute gold. When your'e in the thick of being real rock n rollas (Joe at least) you can be so blind to the experience, always wanting to play better lineups, venues, higher gig fees its easy to lose track of what you are actually doing, the fast paced lifestyle, the gathered experience. Our songwriting workshops brought us back to earth, Working with youth that are just beginning on their songwriting journey lets you see your'e beginnings, it allows you to appreciate how much work youv'e put into this music thing, you come to realise how much knowledge you have to impart to people starting out. And when those kids you have mentored play their first original show, thats actually something special. To round out the workshops we put on an all ages gig at The Esperance Residential College supported by WAM and ECA, The Arid Ones a five piece group born of the program performed three tunes, epic is an understatement.

Joe being away for three months, didn't overly concern us, the only point that was detrimental was that we wouldn't have that time to work on writing new tunes. Suffering from around a four month writers blank is never fun, anytime you try to force songs into existence they just feel average. You can imagine our delight at drawing forth 3 new tracks over a two week period. New music leaves you feeling refreshed, and now i think where all feeling it.

So Joe heads off n tour with Michael Dunstan for three months, Cooper and I will jam every now and then working on those new tunes in one way or another. Excitingly where in full flight booking a June tour, yezza, and that tour will be in support of the release of Western Border (my absolute favourite). Thanks everyone for following our journey thus far, cant wait to seeyas out and about when the live gigs flow once again like gravy.

What an absolute surprise our performance at Edge of The Bay 2019 was, can’t thank all the crew who came out and supported a fantastic evening of live music, the highest of energy all round. Many thanks to the Esperance Shire for bringing the event to life, and to Kieran Doherty, Matt Doherty and James Burston for their brilliant work on sound greatly appreciated. We have two stellar gigs left to round out 2019, the first is Bliss By The Beach falling Friday December 27th at the Port Hotel Hopetoun, and Beach Dazed the following day December 28th at the Esperance Bay Yacht Club.
So, what exactly have we been up to? Well the past three months have seen Grand Casual in some damn fine form with a hectic work load all round. With a moment to reflect as I put together this blog, I’m taken back by the number of kilometres travelled, the life and times of a regional touring band. Everything kicked off with the launch of our single The Sound. We hit the road for a few weeks taking in The South West, and the Goldfields. The three-weekend run of dates finished up by Joe getting naked in the back of the Van as we drove back from Coolgardie. Honestly not sure how or why exactly that came about.

October saw us back and forth from Perth. We played the Indian Ocean Hotel on a Thursday night to a super rowdy crowd, a solid highlight of the last three months. There’s something so rewarding playing original tunes to a crowd who are yet to have heard any of the material. Getting an epic crowd response puts your mind at ease and as a band lets you know you must be on the right track. A fortnight following, we were back in Perth for the 2019 WAMawards. Grand Casual where nominated for best regional act two years running. Hopes where high. As it turned out it was lucky we didn’t take the prize as the three of us were in the Hyatt foyer treating ourselves to some fine libations as our category was called out. On returning to the main room we bumped into Dan White of Blue Child Collective who most deservedly had won the regional category. Our second single of the upcoming ep Stationery released on October 25th, we’ve been receiving some great feedback for the tune which seems to be finding a happy place within our established fan bases hearts.

Whats Next????

So Grand Casual are entering an interesting six-month period. We have two more great gigs in line for 2019 with the Hopetoun Beach Party set to fall on Friday December 27th at the Port Hotel Hopetoun, followed the next day by Beach Dazed at The Esperance Bay Yacht Club. Then we break for January, initially this was going to be a short break to gather ourselves, and work on some fresh material. As it goes this pause in live performance looks like it will roll through to May with Joey set to embark on an epic Australian tour with Mr Dunstan. Coops and I took a little time to get our head around it though now feel exceptionally comfortable moving forward as we both really need the time to work on our cardio before the return of the percussive machine.

Don’t fret though, time off from Live Shows is hardly time off. To bridge the gap, we will work towards the release of our first ep, set to fall in April 2020. Titled Western Border the five-track disk will include two already released singles, The Sound and Stationery and three fresh tunes, title track Western Border, Bluesy Rock and Roller Dirty South and punchy Indi rock anthem GO. So begins the work that leads up to a release, album artwork, promotional strategy, film clips and I’m looking very much forward to booking The Western Border tour that will follow the release of the ep. For which we plan to head north of Perth for the first time into unchartered territory. Thanks go to Andy Lawson at Debaser studio who tracked and produced the upcoming ep, stellar work all round good sir.

As this post draws to a close, I thought it prudent to mention if you’d like to show your support for this little project that is Grand Casual there’s a couple of super simple things you can do. Head over to your favourite streaming service listen to our tunes and add them to your Spotify, Itunes playlist. Share them things with your friends, get your teeth into our creations, before we kill them off with fresh new material. And if you want to directly help us with releasing the cd buy one of our kickass new shirts, cheers Brodie Bratten of Brodeine and Deine for your help with these. Brodie has some available to purchase at her Museum Village store, or get in touch directly with Joe Franzone the keeper of the shirts. Thanks also to Lacey for her wicked shirt modelling, you are a legend.

Thats A Wrap

Well from all of us at Grand Casual, that’s a sign off. Catch us at our last two gigs for 2019 then keep your eyes open for new material and a mid-year tour that promises to be some super fine fun. Have the best of holiday seasons, and make sure to head out and catch some killer live music best enjoyed with a cold beverage, hey its a cultural thing.

Much Love

Grand Casual
Grand Casualtag:grandcasual.com,2005:Post/57412932019-05-03T18:27:11+08:002022-05-07T09:22:40+08:00Perth/Recording/Chuckles
Perth/Recording/Chuckles

As a general rule I hold myself together, rarely shedding a tear. Over the past two weeks thats far from the truth. I expected to get a little teared up watching Avengers End Game, I expected to maybe well up as Game Of Thrones flung aside key characters, I didn't expect tears of sheer joy as we dove into the studio with Andy Lawson at Debaser though thats where I found myself. In the lead up Joe Matt and I played six tunes for six weeks to the point of no return. Oddly enough when we arrived at selecting which to record, two of those where out and an entirely new track GO took the limelight, throwing us a curveball. Luckily Joe "the metronome" Franzone and Matt "turn up the metronome" Cooper, rose to the challenge. A rushed rewrite of lyrics left me feeling refreshed and GO took on some real heart stretching meaning for yours truly.

Over the past three days, our time in the city has sunk in. Two super fun sets one at The Beaufort Street Songwriters and a second at The Sewing Room (thank you Mark Neale) are literally a dull haze, a haze wrapped in epic support from attending Esperance Expats and Matt Corby fans alike (don't worry we still love you). Each ping of the email we dive in excitement to see whether Andy The Maestro has uploaded a new track for our ears to devour. Three tracks in and where brainstorming plans for the next year, the next year and the next after that. I imagine myself back in the studio listening to Matt and Joe build these waves of sound, and I cant contain my emotion, locked in a time walk Im driven back to my first show at The Esperance Sound Shell with Tim Vaughan, Kris Handley and Pete Barton, Im driven back to the first time I thought fuck it and recorded an original song on a shitty desktop computer. And its all built to this moment in a studio with two brothers, two insanely good musicians, with songs under our belt we love you love and that are worthy, Finally after 18 years this feels damn right,

Perth was golden, a couple of rowdy nights rounded out by a super chill Sunday afternoon in the city our main man Jonty Scoble catching some terrific pics for us. Grand Casuals horizon is now vast, with our next steps driven by patience. That said new music is coming your'e way, and we can hardly contain our excitement. In two months time you will be skipping along to The Sound, so close I can taste it.

Saturday night saw the drunken release of a classically accurate Bio Id written feeling inspired after Nannup Music Festival. If you haven't read it Il add it here at the end, I hope you get a hearty chuckle the way the three of us have, remember t not take things too seriously, when i feel serious I stat having panic attacks and honestly where is the fun in that. Epic thanks to my most gorgeous Esther for allowing me to stay just this side of insanity, much love.

GC Proper Accurate Bio

Grand Casual is a three piece band from Esperance Western Australia, Kyron their overweight balding 30 something front man dances like a man possessed, if you don't believe in god you may get a little taste of his spirit as this guy swipes the sweat from his forehead screaming something about Western Mail Order brides.

Cooper on the guitar is never going to know which country exactly these mail order brides are coming from because he cant hear a fucking thing. Much like a snake flicking his tongue to the air he's picking up vibrations through the stage and just noodling about, sweat pissing into his hearing aids rendering them a sonic mess. How is it then that this guys tears lead guitar solos that make the audiences ears bleed melting them to the floor in a writhing mass of ecstatic mental incompetence? telepathy no doubt.

Joe Franzone is an actual loon, he spends a vast amount of time talking shit about how Graylands is a place inside his mind and how he trips out after sucking on eucalyptus leaves while drunk. Have you watched Lord Of The Rings of course you have, fucking epic movie, It has been stated of late that Joe Franzone is The Lord of The Drums and you will find it hard to disagree. When you're watching Grand Casual your'e wondering where that eerie bass is coming from, and does the drummer only have one arm? The answer is simple Joe Franzone can play the bass keys and drums, one hand a piece better than he can take a bottle to the teeth and knock his front fucking tooth out (yeah that happened), he can play the drums better with one hand than you can type www.pornhub.cominto your browser with your left index finger I guarantee it.

Esperance Western Australia, stunning white beaches, population of beautiful people, and a band named Grand Casual that will bare their soul to make you dance like a fucking lunatic, isn't that what life is all about.
Grand Casualtag:grandcasual.com,2005:Post/56408852019-02-13T15:36:36+08:002019-02-13T15:36:36+08:00Bring on 2019
2019 has started of golden with an epic gig at The Cannery Arts Centre Esperance. Was an absolute pleasure to jump on the bill with Blue Child Collective, Myles Mitchell and Campbell Garratt in the first of WA'S finest live events (Feb 9th). Joe, Coop and myself have been spending a hell of a lot of time in the jam room which absolutely paid off Saturday, all stoked with our performance. Watching the dance floor go from mellow to raucous is such a fine feeling.

So where to from here? Well the excitement level continues to build with some super fun gigs on the horizon. We where absolutely stoked to be invited to play The Hopetoun Colour run on Saturday Feb 23rd. Hopetoun has become a second home for Grand Casual, the audience are absolute legends. Super excited to head back over for our first show in 2019 with Bodes and Joe guest starring.

And Nannup oh my Nannup. When Joe first joined Grand Casual he was so keen to play festivals, I thought to myself yeah sure somewhere down the line. Little did Coop or myself realise that festival appearances would become a reality in short order. 2018 we performed at WAMFest in Perth quickly followed by The Blues At Bridgetown, stellar experiences both. When I read that we had been selected to perform at Nannup I was quite honestly shocked, overwhelmed and delighted at the same time. Grand Casual's upcoming appearance at The Nannup Music Festival has driven our writing and rehearsing for the past three months and I have to say we feel prepared.

Have also scored two great support slots, one kicking of proceedings for Little Quirks at The White Star in Albany Friday March 1st just prior to our appearances in Nannup. And on Saturday March 30th we support Noah Dillon and his full band at The Pier Hotel Esperance. Noah is a bloody talent, shall be a beauty.

I would be amiss to finish this update without letting you all in on the most important bit of information, Grand Casual are finally locked down to dive into the studio with Andy Lawson at Debaser in late April, a full week of recording in Perth set to finish with a Saturday night gig in the fine city itself. That night no doubt will be a little rowdy.

Anyway thanks everyone for your ongoing support we love your faces and wouldn't be doing this without you. Much love Kyza, Joey, Cooper at this little band known as Grand Casual.
Grand Casualtag:grandcasual.com,2005:Post/56280712019-02-05T14:48:24+08:002019-02-05T14:48:24+08:00WA'S Finest
WA'S Finest is a series of events featuring featuring WAMs 2018 best regional act nominees and winner supported by a stellar lineup of Esperance local artists. Collaboration between the Cannery Arts Centre and Kyza Presents supported by three great Esperance local sponsors Dudley Newton Optometrists, Elders Insurance and Elpha has seen the series come to life. WA'S finest will run over three months each with a live gig and free workshop offered to The Esperance community.

Grand Casual are wrapped to join Blue Child Collective in the first live event to be held at The Cannery Art Centre Esperance Saturday Feb 9th. Myles Mitchell of Denmark and Esperance local Campbell Garratt join the lineup in what promises to be a cracker of an evening. Tickets are selling fast get amongst it.
Grand Casualtag:grandcasual.com,2005:Post/55449482018-12-08T13:50:00+08:002019-07-20T13:49:30+08:00Tour Video Diary - Part 2
CLICK THE POSTER FOR A CHEEKY VID

That’s it for now, keep ya eyes peeled and If you haven’t already, get in on the action and get amongst the vibes at our upcoming shows, you won’t regret it!

Yours truly, Joey!
Grand Casualtag:grandcasual.com,2005:Post/52375222018-05-16T23:34:03+08:002022-05-07T09:21:22+08:00WAM Esperance/Goldfields Tour Wrap up
Local music acts and regional communities both felt the positive impacts of WAM’s new Goldfields-Esperance Touring Circuit, which saw over 600 people attend four free entry shows headlined by Lenora-based act The Tapping Stickz and Esperance three-piece Grand Casual in Esperance, Norseman, Kalgoorlie, and Leonora last month. Great crowds showed their support at all locations, with punters even braving the rain in Esperance in a true sign of appreciation.

For the artists involved, the tour introduced them to fresh audiences, expanded their immediate touring horizons, and helped take their performance skills to another level.

Kyron Smithson (Grand Casual) spoke highly of the experience, saying, “WAM’s support allowed Grand Casual to step outside our comfort zone, throwing us on a short, fast paced, eye opening tour that delivered such opportunity for immediate growth as a group and also as individuals. Our music found fresh new audiences and our horizons as a touring act where greatly expanded.”

It also provided valuable opportunities for these often-isolated artists to form intra-regional connections, with Kyron Smithson going on to say that, “It was an absolute pleasure to perform and tour alongside The Tapping Stickz, the tour developing a relationship between the two bands that will lead to future collaboration.”

The Tapping Stickz echoed this sentiment, saying, “The Tapping Stickz got to play our songs to mob in Esperance, Norseman and Kalgoorlie for the first time, the tour was a big opportunity for us to help get our band name out there. We had fun with the Grand Casual fellas and had them join us on stage in Kalgoorlie and Leonora.”

For a number of the local support acts involved, it was their first time performing on stage to an audience so was incredibly significant in their development. Taryn Woods-Spurling (Missgenius) said, “I’m so glad I got the opportunity to play my first gig with WAM, the support has been awesome and the set-up was so exciting. I was nervous but everyone with WAM were excellent support, which gave me that confidence to get up. If I wasn’t given such a great opportunity I don’t think I’d be anywhere near close to being able to perform live.”

Local communities sang nothing but praises for WAM’s touring circuit, with the events helping bring all members of the community together.

Manager of Community Development at the Shire of Dundas Pania Turner said, “Ngadju, children, seniors, tourists, families, young adults and teenagers were in attendance at Marks Park and it really was alive with sound and colour.” Going on to say that WAM’s project “provided every opportunity for local talent and community to be involved.”

Esperance’s Cannery Arts Centre committee member Paul Ricciardoalso appreciated the community-building benefits, saying “The WAM event at the Cannery Arts Centre was a winner on so many levels. There were young and old enjoying the event together with a number of community members present who had not previously engaged with the Arts Centre.”

The significance of events such as these did not go unnoticed by local media; earning front page coverage and feature articles in local newspapers as well as interviews and radio play on local radio stations.

As the pilot of WAM’s newest regional touring circuit, it successfully proved the region’s thirst for live contemporary music is alive and well and paves the way for ongoing development in the area.

Legends
West Australian Music today announced a new regional roadshow bringing a series of free, live and local music performances to the Goldfields next month.

The Goldfields-Esperance Touring Circuit is hitting the road for the first time from April 12, the circuit stems from the success of previous Wheatbelt and Pilbara touring circuits.

The pilot tour will see four free performances over four days — all headlined and supported by local acts and will traverse more than 1200km to explore the thirst for contemporary live music in the region.

The shows will be held in community venues and public spaces in Esperance, Norseman, Kalgoorlie, and Leonora.

WAM regional officer Nigel Bird said the rare program would provide regional musicians with much-needed opportunities to hone their craft on stage and build new intra-regional connections.

“While also introducing local communities to the vast breadth of talent hidden in their own backyards,” he said.

“If successful, this pilot tour will prove that contemporary live music has a much greater role to play in the Goldfields-Esperance region, paving the way for ongoing development of programs such as this that support the growth of regional artists.”

Headlining the tour are two bands from opposite ends of the region — Leonora-based The Tapping Stickz and Esperance-born three-piece Grand Casual.

The three songwriters for The Tapping Stickz, Jeffery Wicker, Mark Gleeson and Bert Hayden, each recorded a song as part of WAM’s Demos from The Northern Goldfields community recording compilation project.

Grand Casual’s combination of blues, jazz and soul have been steadily building momentum since late 2017.

The group consists of Matt Cooper, Joe Franzone and Kyron Smithson, the band’s sound is driven by a wide range of influences including Sticky Fingers and The Black Keys and they are releasing their first single Soldiers to coincide with this tour.

Bird said the headliners would also be joined by a selection of top notch local support acts at each venue to ensure all shows were a true testament to the rich talent flowing through the region.

“One of the exciting things is that we are pairing two acts from opposite ends of the region and acts that don’t already have an existing relationship,” he said. “But after five or six days in a van together they are going to get to know each other pretty well and that was one of the intentions.”

All shows are supported by local government associations and arts organisations and are presented in partnership with the Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission.

To build ground-swell for the inaugural tour, WAM have curated a playlist available for streaming via Soundcloud that showcases the distinctive sounds of artists involved.

It includes a sneak peek at the three singles from the upcoming Demos From The Northern Goldfields release, written by members of The Tapping Stickz, and is available through WAM’s Soundcloud page.

Esperance’s very own three-piece Grand Casual are preparing to travel more than 1,200 kilometres in the coming weeks, co-headlining the Goldfields-Esperance Touring Circuit.

The state’s peak music body WAM first announced the new circuit in March, following the success of previous circuits in the Wheatbelt and Pilbara regions.

The initiative is a partnership with the Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission as part “Local Projects, Local Jobs”, with additional support from a number of local governments and organisations.

The tour will feature four free performances over four days, headlined and supported by local acts in community venues and public spaces across the region.

Grand Casual member and local musician Kyron Smithson said the circuit was a great opportunity and due to coincide with the release of their first single ‘Soldiers’.

“This support for regional musicians is huge,” he said.

“We’re all kind of in this isolated zone so, certainly with the touring element and the cost of touring, it can make it really difficult to get out and play other shows.

“The backing shows that these organisations understand the value of what we do and how positive music is for the community.”

The tour begins in Esperance, with a free, family-friendly event at the Cannery Arts Centre on Thursday, April 12, from 6pm, with local acts JohnRatcliff, Rasgueado, and Rachel Vibart.

Mr Smithson thanked the Cannery for their ongoing support, having donated the venue for the event.

“I think because we have such a well established music scene here in Esperance, it’s probably made it a bit easier to facilitate,” he said.

Mr Smithson also extended thanks to WAM regional officer Nigel Bird for his work with the touring circuit.

“Nigel has put a massive amount of work into getting the touring circuit up and happening,” he said.

“He would have put hundreds of hours into it and had a massive workload.”
